Apprenticeship: Four-years

About
Glaziers typically cut, fabricate and install glass for glazing systems in various surfaces and settings, such as windows, doors, shower doors, skylights, storefronts, curtainwall, display cases, mirrors, facades, interior walls, interior partitions, building envelopes, ceilings, and tabletops. A Glazier’s responsibilities may include reading and interpreting blueprints, operating lift platforms, hoisting/rigging/signaling with cranes, welding, working with aluminum, steel, stainless steel, and substitutes for glass, such as plastics, terra cotta, aluminum composite panels and more.

Requirements

  • At least 18 years of age
  • Must be a High School graduate or have a diploma from an equivalent program
  • An apprentice must be employed by a signatory glazing contractor

Apprenticeship Training

Apprentice Glaziers participate in a four-year program before becoming a Journey-person. This includes a related study course along with on the job training. Apprentices receive training in all aspects of the trade. This is necessary to develop a skilled Journey-person. During the four-year program, Apprentices will receive tiered wage increases, as long as they meet the requirements of the program.

Glaziers often work outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather. At times, they will work off of scaffolds or machinery at great heights.

The wages for Journey-person glaziers will typically range from around $26-$32 an hour, or more. Total package rate also varies. Benefits packages may include insurance, pension, vacation or an additional savings option like an annuity. Benefits are usually paid at an additional $18-$20 per hour and they may differ, contributions are dependent on the area in which the work is being performed.
