Three-year apprenticeship

About

Operating engineer apprentices learn safe and productive operation on all kinds of heavy machinery such as cranes, forklifts, excavators, motor graders, dozers, scrapers, loaders, and more on jobsites with general machine maintenance.

Requirements

  • At least 18 years of age
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Physical fit for nature of work
  • Successfully pass a drug screen
  • Able to travel throughout the State of Iowa
  • Construction experience is preferred, but not mandatory

Apprenticeship Training

Apprentices will undergo 6,000 hours of training on the job as well as 144 hours of supplemental training each year. Apprentices will be trained on the following:

  • Operate equipment in a safe and productive manner
  • Perform general inspections and maintenance on equipment
  • Blueprint reading, staking and grading of projects
  • Perform safe rigging
